Friendly Fire: A Forty-niner's Life With the Me-Wuk People tells the story of the native people of the Mother Lode during the Gold Rush.

Tom Maguire in Friendly FireThe public has never been well informed of the catastrophic impact of the Gold Rush on the indigenous cultures that had adapted themselves to the land (and the land to themselves) for many centuries prior to 1848.

Even the History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools slides over the painful topic. After requiring that "Pre-Columbian Settlements and People" be studied in their pre-contact state, and after describing the study of the impact of the Missions on the affected native cultures, the Framework goes on to describe the Gold Rush only in terms of its impact on Mexican Californians, earlier settlers from the States, and the new immigrants.


Friendly Fire does much to fill the gap. It tells the story in a way that is at once entertaining, dramatic, engaging, adventurous, humorous, and historically accurate. It comes complete with Resources that include generous excerpts from primary sources, suggested projects (relating both to history-social sciences and performing arts), an annotated bibliography, and a brief account of the survival of the Me-Wuk people after the genocide.

SYNOPSIS of Friendly Fire

It is 1851. Jeff Blake has returned from the Gold Rush to his Missouri home town. He is telling his fellow citizens why he can't stay, why he has to go back to California. Jeff had gone west with a group of eleven on January 2, 1849. He was dreaming of wealth. He shared all the prejudices against Indians that were universally held by U.S. citizens of the day.

Once in California his group finds gold but just enough to keep them alive, given the high prices. The leaders of his group go off to scout out better diggings. Taking possession of these diggings turns out to require committing an atrocity against a group of Indians. Jeff is swept into participating, but is revolted by what he has done and runs away from his group. Lost and injured in the mountains, he is taken in by a Me-Wuk village. He discovers that everything he thought he knew about Indians is wrong. He grows to understand and love their rich and complex culture, but he knows that destruction is coming, and soon.

The play dramatizes his moral awakening, his appreciation of the Me-Wuk world, and his struggle to deflect the catastrophe.




PERFORMANCE HISTORY of Friendly Fire

Friendly Fire was written by Rick Foster in 1995 while in residence at Sierra Repertory Theatre, in Sonora, California. Sierra Rep toured the play to Mother Lode and Central Valley schools in the fall of that year.

As of June, 2005, Duende has presented Friendly Fire to over 300 audiences including:

AGE RECOMMENDATION for Friendly Fire

Suitable for grades 4 and up as well as adults.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS for Friendly Fire
  • Can be performed in theater, classroom, multi-purpose room, gymnasium, or out-door space.
  • Sound system is not required except for unusual situations. Performer will supply wireless microphone and single speaker if necessary.
  • Special lighting is not required.
  • Set up time is fifteen minutes.

Me-Wuk Audience Praises 'Friendly Fire'

Columbia playwright Rick Foster has had his play "Friendly Fire" produced for scores of audiences in the past two and a half years.

But none was more crucial to him than its recent performance before a small audience at the Tuolumne Rancheria. With this one-man play, Foster has said, he hopes to "tell the truth" about massacres and mistreatment of the Me-Wuk tribe in the crush of the California Gold Rush.

The performance at the rancheria was the first time he presented it to an exclusive audience of tribal members. He and actor Tom Maguire were a little apprehensive going in.

"Tom and I are doing this play not because you need to see it," he told the group. "We're doing it to tell the truth. It's an ugly truth, a harsh truth, and the white people of California don't know it. They've never been told it. They've been able to avoid it."

The play tells the fictional story of Jeff Blake, a white man from Missouri who comes to Sonora with a group of neighbors to mine for gold. He gets caught up in a massacre of a group of Native Americans, is injured trying to flee his group, and by chance is taken in by the Me-Wuks.

Blake goes on to describe his time with the tribe, its day-to-day customs, its methods for managing the land to produce food and supplies, some of its spiritual beliefs and the region's intricate tribal structures.

The title describes the way the Me-Wuks used fires to manage brush and stimulate the growth of grasses and seeds.

Foster wants the descriptions of the massacre and the white man's attitude that the Native Americans were savages to contrast with the descriptions of their traditions and knowledge. That struck a chord with many in the rancheria audience.

"It was very honest, and these historic aspects need to be presented," said Sonny Hendricks in a discussion after the play. "We can't change what happened but this is something future generations need to be aware of. A presentation like this helps."

"The part about living in balance is very important," Hendricks said. "Me-Wuk people lived on this land for thousands and thousands of years, and the only visible evidence that they've been here is what I call the evidence etched in stone—the holes left where they ground their food. Compare that to the last 150 years and the destruction in that short period to the air, water, and land."

Foster and Maguire, new business partners are working now to get a broader audience for Foster's work – and wanted to get the feedback from the Me-Wuk tribal members as part of that process.

Foster wrote the play as part of a set of works on California history produced by Sierra Repertory Theatre and funded by a grant from the California Arts Council. "Friendly Fire" premiered two years ago as one of SRT's "Stages of Discovery" programs performed in area schools.

It has also become a staple at Yosemite National Park, where it is performed several times a week by Sonora actor Van Gordon.

Now Foster and Maguire are working to get "Friendly Fire" and Foster's other two history plays into schools statewide as well as booking performances at other theaters, museums, and cultural events.

The support form tribal members after the rancheria performance, Foster said, means a lot. "The welcome you've given us goes straight to the heart," he said.
