1. Defining the Duende Play So, Duende began in 1998, producing tours of the three plays I had written for Sierra Repertory Theatre. We immediately started scouting for projects to expand our catalog. A list of desiderata quickly became clear: The project had to deal in some way with cultural conflict. California was our starting point but US history and the history of science, were also on the table. Each of our shows had to address the curriculum (as defined by the California State Dept. of Education) of one or more grade levels. At the same time we had an… [Continue reading]

Duende: The Origin Myth
In the fourth grade I learned that our California Missions were founded by the good friars who wanted to help the Indians live and save their souls when they died. The Indians’ views on this project were not discussed, nor were their descendants in evidence in Santa Cruz where I grew up. This was around 1948. Discovery of people for whom democracy itself was dangerous—that was not on my horizon. I was a little secular evangelist, convinced… [Continue reading]
About Duende
Duende like art itself has faces that are both appealing and dangerous. It can be dark and hard to pin down. Coming from southern Spain, “Duende” has only recently migrated to English. Dictionaries give meanings sometimes at odds with each other. The New Oxford English Dictionary gives: 1. A ghost, an evil spirit; 2. Inspiration, magic, fire. The Random House Dictionary gives: 1. A goblin, demon, spirit; 2. Charm, magnetism. The Larousse Spanish-English Dictionary translates duende as Goblin, elf, imp/Magic. It gives the usages: los duendes del Flamenco, the Magic of Flamenco; tener duende, to have a certain magic. We… [Continue reading]
Gail Segerstrom
Gail has been a previous board member and friend of Duende for almost 25 years. A Sonora native, her background includes a BA in fine art from Stanford in 1971 with a minor in English. Her interest in communication design led to a ten-year stint designing magazines in NYC, from the Muppets to sports to wildlife conservation. Upon returning to Tuolumne County in 1989, she followed a calling to teach at Sierra Waldorf School. There she was exposed to Duende’s plays for schools and became an instant believer in its mission. As a longtime graphic design contributor and recently, opening her… [Continue reading]
